Resources for my GAME Plan

My goals for my GAME plan were based upon the focus areas of digital citizenship skills and building my leadership skills.  There are many resources and information available to me to help me to take the action and build these skills for myself or for my teaching to the students.
The first resource I will use is Common Sense Media.  This website is a well designed hub for all things related to media. “Common Sense Media is dedicated to improving the lives of kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in a world of media and technology”.  The feature they have that best addresses my needs is their “Digital Literacy and Citizenship Classroom Curriculum”.  These free resources range from videos to iBooks, to printable resources, and more.  The resources can help me begin to implement good curriculum that addresses the needs of my students beginning at a young age.  By looking through these curriculum pieces, I can pull lessons to implement throughout the year, as well as develop ideas for integrating into projects that our students complete.
The next resource I will use is the website from the Partnership for 21st century Skills.  This website really focuses on the framework of a 21st century learner and the skills required to create a successful digital citizen.  P21’s mission statement is “to serve as a catalyst to position 21st century readiness at the center of US K12 education by building collaborative partnerships among education, business, community and government leaders”.  The focus of this website is to provide the information for educational leaders in districts and for those that are making policy related decisions for schools.  This is a great place to find fantastic learning resources and connect with districts that have already set a standard for exemplar programs.
Another resource I will use is a publication from the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development called Educational Leadership.  This publication has many articles addressing the leading trends in education that are important for those in a leadership position to know.  This resource will help me gain the knowledge needed to create a vision, make decisions, build a community, and vitality in a leadership role.  It is important that as a leader I have all the information necessary to make informed decisions and contribute to a collaborative group.

The last resources I will use are my social media outlets.  I will become a member of Educational Leadership PLNs so that I can collaborate and share resources with others leaders so that I can learn from them to build my skills and knowledge.  This will also help me to have a place to ask questions of other professionals and leaders creating an invaluable resource where those that have come before me can share their knowledge and I can learn from their expertise.

  1. Nicole,

I love that you are using numerous resources to help meet your goal! I have never heard of Common Sense Media. After I read your blog post, I decided to check out Common Sense Media. Wow! What a great resource! There are tons of resources listed on the website. The one thing that caught my eye was the Graphite platform, which makes it easier for educators to find the best apps, games, and websites for the classroom. I will definitely be using this in the future!
My principal is very supportive on teaching digital citizenship. I did not have many resources to use for teaching digital citizenship. In my research for digital citizenship resources, I came across a phenomenal Wiki. The following is the Wiki address: http://learn-the-ropes.wikispaces.com/For+Kids+%26+Teens...Sites . This Wiki has numerous resources on digital citizenship for kids, teens, parents, and educators. A list of the resources for kids includes BrainPop, PBS Kids, Web Warriors, etc. Hopefully this resource will be helpful in you meeting your goals!

    1. Sara,
I'm glad that you were able to check out Common Sense Media. Graphite is a wonderful new addition to their plethora of resources. Thank you for sharing the Wiki. I can't wait to check it out. I always love finding new resources I can use or share with my staff.

      Thanks,
      Nicole

  2. Nicole,
Your websites that you have offered are going to allow your students to create numerous ways to meet the goals you have created for them! You have researched each of the websites to make sure they are just what you are looking for and were willing to take the time to detail what each website had to offer. This will make the goals easier for each student to obtain and your GAME Plan will be amazing! I am curious, will any of these websites require students to create a username? This has caused my class to come to a halt in some areas since the creation of a username can be tough. Students (and some adults) are unwilling to use great websites when they are unsure about creating a username. Just something to think about! Great additions of technology!!!

    1. Lisa,
Some of the resources do not require usernames and passwords, but there are some I use that do. Since students in our district have their own email addresses, it is not difficult for us to have these created, as some of the sites offer an easy upload of students accounts with a .csv sheet. All my students have the same username and password as they do for the computer login, email login, and more. Most sites I use are educator friendly so this makes creating my classroom logins that much easier. I think my role as Innovative Learning Specialist also allows for me to have the time to pre-load these before meeting with the teacher and their class. I like to have them create at least one account along with me though so that they become familiar with the process. I don't want them to shy away from great resources just because they need to create a login.
      Thanks for sharing,
      Nicole

  3. Nicole,

I love your ideas and resources used. I have not heard of common sense media until I read the last blog share and now yours. It seems I have to get on to that site and check it out.

It seems you have a variety of resources to use for both of your goals in your GAME plan. It appears to me that you are right on track. Is there anything that you are struggling with? Anything that as you are getting further into it you are thinking of changing or modifying? I find that my initial ideas or goals are hardly ever what the final outcome winds up being.

The Partnership for 21st Century Skills seems to be another interesting resource with great feedback. I like that teachers are collaborating and allowing others to use their ideas or branch off from them!

    Thank you for sharing!

    Amanda
