The Civil War Soldier - Virtual Lesson with the Virginia Historical Society

Today students in my fifth grade classes were able to speak virtually with the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond Virginia.  The topic of the discussion was the Civil War soldier.

Students learned about the everyday experience of a Civil War soldier, focusing on aspects of camp life such as clothing, food, and letters from home. From the perspective of those who fought, students will gained insight into the war and its consequences. Students were able to hear about the trials and hardships of the Civil War soldier, hear about the similarities and differences in equipment used by the Union and Confederate soldiers, learn what it may have been like to carry these items during the four years of the war, and discussed the effect the war had on Virginians (who fought against family and friends) and the United States.

Students were able to ask a couple questions that they had remaining after the discussion.
It was an interesting and engaging look at the Civil War from the viewpoint of the soldiers, and a fantastic experience as the fifth graders continue their study of the Civil War.
